‘영국적 사운드’가 된 방그라

인도계 영국인 팝 스타인 아파치 인디언(Apache Indian)의 데뷔 앨범이자 ‘대박’을 터뜨린 앨범이다. 음악 스타일은 당시 ‘레게 랩’, ‘라가(ragga)’, ‘댄스홀(dancehall)’ 등의 이름으로 불리던 스타일에 가장 가깝다. 두 트랙에서 ‘피처링’해준 맥시 프리스트(Maxi Priest)와 프랭키 폴(Frankie Paul)의 이름은 이 음반이 대서양을 가로질러 형성되어 있는 레게 음악인의 커뮤니티에서 나왔음을 말해준다. 물론 아파치라는 이름도 레게의 슈퍼스타인 슈퍼캣(Supercat)의 예명으로부터 차용된 것이고, 음반 레코딩이 자메이카에 가서 고(故) 밥 말리가 소유하고 있던 스튜디오에서 이루어진 점도 이런 사실을 확인해주는 정보다.

당연한 말이겠지만 아파치 인디언은 래퍼(rapper)다. 이는 단지 음악 장르나 보컬 스타일을 넘어 ‘자신이 소속된 커뮤니티의 문제들을 고발한다’는 사회적 역할을 의미한다. 실제로 이 음반에 담긴 음악은 흥겨운 댄스 리듬과 사회비판적 메시지를 결합하려고 한다. ‘반항적이면서도 재미있는’ 음악이라는 뜻이다. “Prelude”에 이어 나오는 “Chok Three”는 이런 시도를 가장 잘 보여준다. 버스 부분의 랩에 이어 흥겨운 코러스가 나오고, 드문드문 각종 효과음을 가미하여 단조롭게 들리기 쉬운 리듬에 탄력을 부여한다. 다음 트랙인 “Fe Real”은 먼 곳에서 라가머핀 풍의 토스팅(toasting)이 시작되고 뒤이어 끈적거리는 목소리의 노래가 이끌면서 곳곳에 랩이 삽입되어 있다. 맨체스터의 라가 뮤지션 맥시 프리스트와 보컬을 분담하고 있고 편곡도 산뜻하게 되어 있어 끝날 때까지 지루하지 않게 즐길 수 있다. “Everybody do you feel it fe real / Say we love this dancehall music fe real”이라는 가사를 가진 코러스는 한두 번만 들으면 누구라도 따라 부르게 될 정도의 훅(hook)이 있다. 중간에 펀잡어로 된 가사가 나오는데 운율감이 살아있어서 설령 영어 가사가 아니면 거슬리는 사람도 그리 거부감을 갖지 않을 것이다.

그 뒤로 단순한 리듬을 잘게 쪼개서 몸을 들썩거리게 만드는 “Fix Up”, 레게 리듬이지만 왠지 칼립소의 느낌을 주는 “Aids Warning”, 앨범에서 가장 공격적인 래핑을 구사하는 “Guru”, 신서사이저 라인과 리듬이 훵키한 재즈의 무드를 만들어내는 “Come Follow Me”, 토킹 드럼과 비슷한 드럼 비트와 덥(dub)의 음향효과가 두드러진 “Don’t Touch” 등이 이어진다. 앨범 속지에 깨알같은 글씨로 적힌 가사를 읽을 수 있다면 에이즈, 알콜리즘, 인종차별, 카스트 제도 등 인도계 커뮤니티의 사회적 모순들을 다루고 있음도 알 수 있다.

하지만 아무래도 앨범의 백미는 팝 싱글 차트 정상을 차지한 “Arranged Marriage”다. 돌 드럼이 두들겨대다가 플루트 비슷한 소리로 시작되는 인트로는 이 음악의 주인공이 ‘인도계’임을 확실하게 알려준다. 인도풍의 음향이 양념처럼 삽입되었던 다른 곡과는 다르다는 뜻이다. 중반부에는 인도 영화음악 풍의 남녀 듀엣도 등장한다. 리듬은 건반 악기가 레게 비트를 만들어내고 프로그래밍된 드럼 비트가 전개되는 가운데 타블라와 팀발레 소리도 불쑥불쑥 삽입되는 등 다채롭게 프로그래밍되어 있다. 아파치는 영어, 자메이카 영어(파투아), 펀잡어를 번갈아가면서 부지런히 읊어대는데, 가사는 인도인들의 ‘가족에서 중매하는 결혼 제도’를 테마로 하고 있다. 예상과는 달리 아파치 인디언의 입장은 모호한데, 인도식 중매결혼을 찬성하지는 않지만 그렇다고 서양식 연애결혼을 지지하지도 않는다(이 곡의 가사는 아래 참조).

메시지의 모호함은 음악의 모호함이기도 하다. 아파치 본인의 표현에 의하면 그의 음악은 “자메이카에서는 방그라의 요소가 없기 때문에 이런 음악을 들을 수 없고, 인도에서는 레게나 팝의 요소가 없기 때문에 이런 음악을 들을 수 없을 것이다”. 그래서 그는 자신의 음악이 “매우 영국적인 사운드(a very British Sound)”라고 말한다. 영국이라는 나라가 ‘멀티에쓰닉’한 사회임을 고려한다면 틀린 말은 아니다. 물론 아파치 인디언 본인은 영국의 음악산업 시스템이 그를 ‘투 히트 원더’ 정도로 만들어 버릴 정도로 냉혹한 시스템인 줄은 잘 몰랐던 것 같다. 20010616 | 신현준 homey@orgio.net
